Bailaora Flamenco: Flamenco Dancer
From the series: VOS - Voices of Portugal & Spain
Having experienced a live flamenco show in Madrid several years ago, I was looking forward to another dose, this time in the city around which flamenco culture had originated centuries ago.
There are many shows to choose from in Seville and we were not disappointed with the one we selected, held in a tiny bar in old town not far from our apartment.
The performances of all three female performers – guitarist, singer and dancer – seemed very technically proficient to my uneducated eye, but it was the vibrancy and pathos they were able to convey that made the show absolutely riveting.
While I had no idea of the meaning of the words, the emotion of the music, movement and voice spoke clearly of human frailty, love, loss and sadness, and ultimately of the victory of the human spirit over the inescapable pain and anguish that life presents us with.
If nothing else, Flamenco is a joyful, defiant celebration of how courage in the face of adversity provides a partial remedy to the suffering we must endure and it is this that I have sought to represent in the painting.
