Chatham Island Forget Me Not
From the Series: Some of my best friends are plants
I love this plant but it clearly does not love me, as every attempt I have made to add this to my garden has resulted in abject failure. This is made worse by the fact that every gardening guide I read tells me how easy it is to grow and that it will adapt to almost all soil and sun conditions.
Despite the supposed simplicity of the task, I have attempted to cultivate this beauty no fewer than five times in the last 20 years. The Chatham Island isn’t a true forget-me-not but the flowers look remarkably similar to its namesake, of which I have a plethora in my garden. These beautiful, blue bloomers have been a staple in the jars, vases and bottles in most rooms in our house for many years.
I’m not going to give up on the elusive Chatham Island variety, however, and I have plans to make it sixth time lucky, as I would love to see the distinctive flowers set against the generous, glossy, green leaves when I look out our back window.
I thought about what I wanted to feature in this painting and decided against the obvious “green leaves and blue flowers” approach. Instead I’ve focused on the lines, texture and form of the foliage set against the very different shape, colour and size of the flowers.
