Chegada: Arrival
From the series: VOS - Voices of Portugal & Spain
The first painting I completed in the series, this piece is all about arriving; not just physically arriving in a new country, but arriving at a place where I could begin to hear its inner voice and start thinking about how to translate that onto canvas.
It takes time to notice, absorb, reflect and react to a new environment. This piece represents the frenetic, beautiful colours, shapes, energy and, dare I say it, “vibe” of Lisbon.
I loved its shabby, grimy, unkempt style. There’s a looseness, and a relaxed bohemian-type feel. The colours and the composition are what I have to say about that glorious energy. There’s the rich red soil which is used to make the vast display of rooftop tiles.
The charcoal and earth palette reflect the marble, cobblestones and diverse mix of tiles and house colours; or at least the ones whose voices I heard during our short stay in Portugal’s capital.
