Crates de las Maravillas
From the series: VOS - Voices of Portugal & Spain
Gruta de las Maravillas’ translation of “cave of wonders” is no exaggeration. The massive underground cavity accessed from downtown Aracena was only discovered in the late 19th century before being opened to tourists in 1914.
By the time of human discovery, nature had already put millions of years of work into its creation. When you consider that the massive stalactites and stalagmites grow at the rate of several millimetres per century you get some perspective of the time scales involved.
The one kilometre guided walk through the underground wonderland featured scene after scene of quite remarkable forms, textures and colours, as rock, crystal and river pool combined to speak silently of an organic process millenia in the making.
It is this organic feel I have sought to embody in the piece to represent this unique example of the mysterious, infinite, creative force that is Mother Nature.
