Dama Velha: Old Dame
From the series: VOS - Voices of Portugal & Spain This was my favourite building in Olhão; a house painter’s nightmare, but for a painter of large abstracts like me, an absolute dream!
While it was perhaps the most extreme example of unkempt splendour in the neighbourhood, it was far from the only one. We stumbled upon this beauty on a particularly hot, dusty day and the house had an almost luminous glow.
Street after street of whitewashed and brightly coloured facades adorned every view with their peeling paint, ironwork and tiles all in various states of disrepair. I loved the crumbling mix of pink, orange, lilac, blue and terracotta. It was the colours and the glorious hues I wanted to capture; not so much the building itself.
Standing up close, the textures and tones of paint, plaster and brickwork spoke silently of families grown and lives of joy and pain lived within its weathered walls.
